A few Polynesian seedless varieties of breadfruit were introduced to Caribbean islands during the late 18th century. Today, it is grown in more than 90 countries throughout South and South East Asia, the Caribbean, Africa, Central America and the Pacific Ocean.

The breadfruit name was derived from the texture of the slightly ripe fruit when cooked, similar to freshly baked bread and having a potato-like flavour.
