However, it is much heavier than potatoes.

So, true yams are dry and starchy root crops. It is closer to yucca in flavour than sweet potatoes. Yams are native to Africa. Almost 90 per cent of yams are grown there. However, yams are grown throughout the Pacific island countries too. Thus far, certain varieties are seasonal in different island countries. With a bark-like skin, the flesh is mostly off-white. However, there are red and purple varieties too.

Confusion

Many people confuse yams with sweet potatoes. There is contradictory information floating around about them. They are two different plants. Some people may argue that the name ‘yam’ came from Portuguese or Spanish words. Perhaps the name did travel across the Atlantic on slave ships. Most probably in the mouths of traders rather than the slaves. There appears to be some explanation for this theory in Webster’s Dictionary.

So, the claim is the origin of the word yam is nyami. It means to eat in the Fulani language. It was a popular language spoken in West Africa during the slave trade. This language is still spoken there today. These people were mostly consuming yams. In fact, the descendants still eat them.

Yam dishes

Regardless of what you call them, yams are delicious as savoury or sweet dishes. As a side dish, you can either boil or bake them. It may be peeled or unpeeled. You may add yams to soups, stews and braises. Mashed yams are the perfect ingredient in quick bread and pies too.

After draining boiled yams you may use in any recipe that may call for mashed yams. You may use a potato masher or electric mixer. It will produce fluffy and smooth mashed yams.

You may cook yams in the oven too. It is suitable to create simple and nutritious side dishes for you meatloaf, baked chicken and grilled steaks. Yams taste delicious when you drizzle manuka honey on them while roasting them in ovens. It softens and caramelises. You may roast yams with red onions and pumpkin and toss them through pasta or salad. It is a quick and tasty dinner.

Inspirational dishes

Yams are excellent snacks for toddlers too. You may cook for a few minutes in the microwave and it is ready to serve. When grilling lamb chops, you may replace mashed potatoes with mashed yams. It is absolutely delicious. Thus far, it is yummy to add to your favourite roast too. Furthermore, you may slice yams and toss them through in stir fry. It tastes great, particularly when they are little crisp. Yams are perfect for a salad base. Lightly cook and slice them. Then add a lemon or lime vinaigrette. It is luscious.
