White wine is the largest category. It is 45 percent of our local sales. Thus far, it is followed by red wine at 40 percent and sparkling wine at 11 percent. However, in recent times the share of red wine has been growing. So far, Australian wine dominates the domestic market. Imported wines have less than a 20 percent market share. Australia imports around 95 million litres of wine per annum. In fact, two-thirds come from New Zealand.

Wine exports

Australia exports an astounding 800 million litres of wine per annum. However, Australian wine exports declined by 10 percent in value to $1.87 billion. This was to year ending June 2023. In fact, the total value of exports was 19 percent below the 10-year average of $2.31 billion. The volume was 15 percent below the previous average in the same time period.

So, the main cause for the decline in value was exports to the USA. This is because the USA is experiencing a structural decline in lower price segments. Australian wine predominantly positions in this market. Exports to the UK have declined in value too. This was after two years of elevated shipments. It was due to pre-Brexit demand and COVID-19-induced changes in consumer preferences
